Traditionally, these areas have been functional rather than inspiring, often consisting of vending machines, limited seating options and sterile surroundings. As a result, they offer little value to employees looking to make the most of their break time away from the production floor.
Three North East manufacturers, Walker Filtration, Crane Authentication and Dacon Fabrications, recently set out to change this. Recognising the importance of employee wellbeing, they invested in creating modern breakout spaces designed to support rest, relaxation and social interaction.
Working closely with key stakeholders from each business, our design team identified opportunities to transform the traditional factory canteen into a more engaging and versatile environment. In some cases, employee questionnaires were developed to gather direct feedback on what staff wanted from the space, helping to shape the final designs.
Following the recent refurbishment of its factory canteen, Dacon Fabrications has already seen the positive impact these improvements can have on its workforce.

After having recently invested in the refurbishment of our factory canteen, the transformation has already proven to be hugely beneficial. The upgrade has given staff a clean, comfortable and modern environment to take their breaks, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Many have commented that the new canteen feels like a proper place to unwind, socialise and reset during the working day, as well as being a valuable space for training, events and meetings.
The improvement has had a noticeable uplift on staff morale, with colleagues saying they feel more valued and appreciated knowing the company has invested directly in their wellbeing.

Many manufacturing facilities operate staggered or fixed break times, resulting in large numbers of employees using breakout areas simultaneously. This can lead to increased noise levels and overstimulating environments if spaces are not designed effectively.

To address this, we consider a range of acoustic solutions alongside biophilic design features. A successful breakout space gives employees the flexibility to choose how they spend their time. This is why our design team carefully zones spaces to accommodate different preferences and activities.
Features often include banquette seating with dining tables to maximise perimeter areas, soft seating that creates a relaxed coffee shop feel, and high tables with stools that appeal to those seeking a more informal or independent seating option.
The practical elements are equally important. Adequate refrigeration for packed lunches, sufficient microwave facilities and efficient refreshment points all contribute to a positive employee experience. Increasingly, traditional kettles are being replaced by instant hot and chilled water taps, providing greater convenience while helping to streamline shared kitchen areas.
