New base for 50-strong environmental consultancy
We were delighted to feature in the press this week with Lantern Building Consultancy for our project with Franks Portlock.
Thanks to Bdaily, Insider Media and Sunderland Echo for their coverage.
An environmental firm has moved into a new base following a six-figure project supported by Lantern Building Consultancy.
Franks Portlock, which specialises in dealing with asbestos and water hygiene, tasked Lantern Building Consultancy with managing its expansion into a newly fitted out facility to accommodate its next phase of development.
The £220,000 project included a competitive tender process before Washington-based AMH Workspace was appointed to create a head office for the environmental consultancy at Sunderland’s Hylton Park.
The 5,720 sq ft unit, which is twice the size of the company’s previous premises, has been designed to provide a multi functional environment, incorporating private meeting rooms, dedicated training areas, a large collaborative breakout space, and the latest in laboratory facilities alongside modern office accommodation.
Phil Franks, director at Franks Portlock, which has a network of premises across the UK, said: “The larger workplace with its upgraded facilities will allow us to look forward to our next decade of growth, with the need for more staff inevitable as we take on new contracts.
“Having grown pretty consistently over the last few years in both number of staff and turnover, we simply did not have enough space to accommodate everyone comfortably at our previous premises.”
Prior to work starting, the Lantern team also acted as cost consultant, assisting in negotiations with landlord UK Land Estates.
Martin Smith, a director at Lantern Building Consultancy, said: “It has been a privilege to work with Franks Portlock to bring its vision to life. From early cost planning and negotiations through to delivery on site, our focus has been on providing clear, joined up advice and ensuring every detail is aligned with the company’s long-term goals.
“Working collaboratively with AMH Workspace, we’re proud to have helped create a space for Franks Portlock that supports their team’s continued success.”

Simon Greensmith, director at AMH Workspace, which was also involved in fitting out Franks Portlock’s previous head office in 2018, added: “It was a privilege to be invited back to help shape the next chapter for Franks Portlock. Working with the team at Lantern throughout the project, we’ve created a space that not only looks great but supports the team as they grow and innovate.”
